Garlic – Purple Stripe (Pack of 3)

Grow a beautiful and flavorful heirloom garlic with Purple Stripe Garlic. This distinctive variety is known for its attractive bulbs with purple-streaked skins and rich, complex flavor. Purple Stripe garlic produces large cloves with a robust, slightly spicy taste that mellows into a sweet, rich flavor when cooked.

Purple Stripe garlic is a hardneck variety that performs exceptionally well in colder climates. The plants are hardy, productive, and produce flavorful bulbs along with edible garlic scapes in early summer. These scapes are prized for their mild garlic flavor and can be used in cooking, pestos, and stir-fries.

Growing Instructions for Zone 3b

Purple Stripe garlic thrives in cold climates and is ideal for Zone 3b gardens.

Planting Time

Plant garlic in fall (September–October) before the ground freezes. Fall planting allows roots to develop before winter and produces larger bulbs the following summer.

Preparing the Cloves

  • Separate bulbs into individual cloves just before planting.
  • Select the largest cloves for planting to produce the best bulbs.

Location

Choose a location with full sun (6–8 hours daily) and well-drained soil rich in organic matter.

Planting Depth

  • Plant cloves 2–3 inches deep with the pointed tip facing upward.
  • Cover with soil and water lightly.

Spacing

  • Space cloves 4–6 inches apart.
  • Leave 12–18 inches between rows.

Mulching

Apply a layer of straw or leaf mulch after planting to protect cloves through winter and reduce weed growth.

Watering

Water regularly during spring growth, keeping soil evenly moist but not waterlogged.

Fertilizing

Apply compost or a balanced fertilizer in early spring to support strong bulb development.

Garlic Scapes

Hardneck varieties produce curly flower stalks (scapes) in early summer. Remove these to encourage larger bulb development and enjoy them in cooking.

Harvesting

  • Garlic is ready to harvest when the lower leaves turn brown while the upper leaves remain green.
  • Carefully loosen soil and lift bulbs without damaging them.

Curing

Allow harvested bulbs to cure in a dry, well-ventilated area for 2–3 weeks before storage.

With proper care, Purple Stripe Garlic will produce beautiful, flavorful bulbs and delicious garlic scapes for your kitchen.
