Lily – Tiger Tigrinum Splendens

Add bold color and timeless beauty to your garden with the striking blooms of Tiger Lily Tigrinum Splendens. This classic heirloom variety produces vibrant orange flowers covered with distinctive dark spots, creating the iconic “tiger” pattern that gives the plant its name. The graceful, recurved petals and dramatic speckling make these lilies a standout feature in summer gardens.

Tiger Tigrinum Splendens lilies grow tall and produce multiple downward-facing blooms along each sturdy stem, creating a spectacular display in mid to late summer. These hardy lilies naturalize easily in garden beds and borders, returning year after year with even more flowers. They are also excellent for attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies and make unique additions to cut flower arrangements.

Growing Instructions for Zone 3b

Tiger lilies are extremely hardy and perform very well in colder climates. They can remain planted in the ground year-round in Zone 3b.

Planting Time
Plant bulbs in spring once the soil can be worked or in early fall before the ground freezes.

Location
Choose a location with full sun to partial sun and well-drained soil. Tiger lilies tolerate a range of soil types but perform best in fertile, well-drained soil.

Planting Depth

  • Plant bulbs about 6 inches deep.
  • Place the bulb with the pointed end facing upward.
  • Cover with soil and water thoroughly.

Spacing
Space bulbs 8–12 inches apart to allow room for mature growth.

Watering
Water regularly during the growing season to keep soil evenly moist, but avoid overly wet soil.

Fertilizing
Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring when new shoots appear to support healthy growth.

Mulching
Add a layer of mulch around plants to retain moisture and protect bulbs during winter.

Winter Care in Zone 3b

  • Tiger lilies are very winter hardy and can remain planted in the ground.
  • Allow foliage to die back naturally after flowering to help the bulb store energy for the next season.
  • Apply mulch in late fall for additional winter protection if desired.

With proper care, Tiger Tigrinum Splendens Lilies will produce vibrant orange blooms year after year, adding bold color, height, and classic beauty to summer gardens.
