Onions – Lorient Multiplier

Lorient Multiplier Onions are a traditional heirloom multiplying onion prized for their ability to naturally divide and produce multiple new bulbs from a single planted bulb. Instead of growing just one onion, each bulb forms a cluster of several medium-sized onions, making them highly productive and perfect for gardeners looking to quickly expand their onion harvest.

These onions have a rich golden-brown skin and a firm, flavorful flesh with a classic onion taste that is slightly sweet when cooked. Lorient Multiplier onions store well and are excellent for roasting, sautéing, soups, and everyday kitchen use. Gardeners value this variety for its reliability, strong yields, and easy propagation year after year.

Because they multiply underground, a small starting amount can quickly turn into a large harvest over a few growing seasons. They are especially well suited to colder climates and short growing seasons.

Growing Instructions (Zone 3b)

Multiplier onions grow best when planted as soon as the soil can be worked in spring.

  • Planting Time: Plant bulbs in early spring once the ground thaws, typically late April to May in Zone 3b. Fall planting can also work with good mulch protection.
  • Sun: Full sun is ideal for best bulb development.
  • Soil: Loose, fertile, well-drained soil rich in organic matter with a pH of 6.0–7.0.
  • Planting Depth: Plant bulbs 1–2 inches deep with the pointed end facing upward.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs 6–8 inches apart in rows 12–18 inches apart to allow clusters to expand.
  • Watering: Keep soil evenly moist but not soggy, especially during early growth.
  • Growth Habit: Each bulb will divide and form a cluster of multiple onions underground.
  • Harvest: Harvest when the tops begin to yellow and fall over in mid to late summer. Lift clusters carefully and allow them to cure in a dry, well-ventilated area for 2–3 weeks.
  • Saving Bulbs: Replant some of the smaller bulbs the following season to continue multiplying your crop.

Lorient Multiplier onions are hardy, productive, and an excellent long-term addition to any home garden.
