Growing Instructions for Zone 3b

Potatoes grow very well in cooler climates and are a dependable crop for Zone 3b gardens.

Planting Time
Plant seed potatoes in spring once soil temperatures reach about 45°F (7°C) and the soil can be worked.

Preparing Seed Potatoes

  • Larger potatoes can be cut into pieces, ensuring each piece has at least 1–2 eyes.
  • Allow cut pieces to dry for 24 hours before planting to reduce the risk of rot.

Location
Choose a location with full sun (6–8 hours daily) and loose, well-drained soil rich in organic matter.

Planting Depth

  • Dig trenches about 4 inches deep.
  • Place seed potato pieces with the eyes facing upward.
  • Cover lightly with soil.

Spacing

  • Space potatoes 10–12 inches apart in rows.
  • Leave 24–30 inches between rows.

Hilling

  • As plants grow, mound soil around the base of the plants to cover developing tubers and prevent exposure to sunlight.

Watering

Keep soil evenly moist throughout the growing season, especially during tuber formation.

Fertilizing

Apply compost or a balanced fertilizer at planting to support strong plant growth.

Harvesting

  • New potatoes can be harvested about 60–70 days after planting depending on the variety.
  • For mature potatoes, harvest when foliage dies back and skins have hardened.

The C1 Combo Seed Potato Sack is perfect for gardeners who want to try multiple potato varieties while enjoying a productive and flavorful harvest.
