Growing Instructions for Zone 3b

Potatoes grow very well in colder climates and are a reliable crop for Zone 3b gardens.

Planting Time
Plant seed potatoes in spring once the soil temperature reaches about 45°F (7°C) and the soil can be worked.

Preparing Seed Potatoes

  • Larger potatoes can be cut into pieces, ensuring each piece has at least 1–2 eyes.
  • Allow cut pieces to dry for 24 hours before planting to prevent rot.

Location
Choose a location with full sun (6–8 hours daily) and loose, well-drained soil rich in organic matter.

Planting Depth

  • Dig trenches about 4 inches deep.
  • Place seed potato pieces with the eyes facing upward.
  • Cover lightly with soil.

Spacing

  • Space potatoes 10–12 inches apart in rows.
  • Leave 24–30 inches between rows.

Hilling

  • As plants grow, mound soil around the base of the plants to protect developing tubers from sunlight and increase yields.

Watering

Keep soil evenly moist throughout the growing season, especially when plants begin forming tubers.

Fertilizing

Apply compost or a balanced fertilizer during planting to encourage healthy growth.

Harvesting

  • New potatoes can be harvested about 60 days after planting.
  • For full-sized potatoes, wait until the plant foliage dies back.

With proper care, Norland Red Skinned Seed Potatoes will produce an early, abundant harvest of smooth red potatoes with excellent flavor.
