Seed Potato – Prince of Orange (500g)

Prince of Orange is a distinctive and flavorful potato variety known for its attractive reddish skin and rich golden-yellow flesh. This unique potato offers a smooth texture and a slightly sweet, nutty flavor that makes it an excellent choice for roasting, baking, boiling, and gourmet dishes. Its vibrant color and excellent taste make it a standout variety for both home gardeners and cooks.

This variety produces medium-sized, oval potatoes with good yields and reliable performance in the garden. Prince of Orange potatoes are valued for their firm texture and ability to hold their shape during cooking, making them perfect for roasted potato dishes, hearty soups, and salads.

Growing your own seed potatoes allows gardeners to enjoy fresh, flavorful potatoes straight from the garden while producing a rewarding harvest during the growing season.

Growing Instructions (Zone 3b)

Potatoes are well suited for northern climates and grow successfully in Zone 3b gardens.

  • Planting Time: Plant seed potatoes in late spring once the soil warms to about 7–10°C (45–50°F). In Zone 3b this is typically mid-May to early June.
  • Sun: Full sun is required for strong plant growth and healthy tuber development.
  • Soil: Plant in loose, fertile, well-drained soil rich in organic matter with a pH between 5.0–6.5.
  • Preparation: If potatoes are large, cut into pieces with at least 1–2 eyes per piece. Allow cut pieces to dry for 1–2 days before planting.
  • Planting Depth: Plant pieces about 3–4 inches deep.
  • Spacing: Space plants 12 inches apart in rows 24–30 inches apart.
  • Hilling: When plants reach 6–8 inches tall, mound soil around the stems. Repeat hilling as plants grow to encourage more tuber production and prevent sunlight from greening potatoes.
  • Watering: Keep soil evenly moist, especially during flowering when tubers begin forming.
  • Harvest: Harvest new potatoes around 70–80 days after planting, or allow 90–110 days for full maturity.
  • Storage: Cure harvested potatoes in a dark, well-ventilated area for 1–2 weeks before storing in a cool, dark location.

Prince of Orange is a productive and flavorful potato variety that adds both color and gourmet quality to the home garden.
