Growing Instructions for Zone 3b

Potatoes grow very well in colder climates and are a dependable crop for Zone 3b gardens.

Planting Time
Plant seed potatoes in spring once soil temperatures reach about 45°F (7°C) and the soil can be worked.

Preparing Seed Potatoes

  • Larger potatoes can be cut into pieces, ensuring each piece has at least 1–2 eyes.
  • Allow cut pieces to dry for 24 hours before planting to reduce the risk of rot.

Location
Choose a location with full sun (6–8 hours daily) and loose, well-drained soil rich in organic matter.

Planting Depth

  • Dig trenches about 4 inches deep.
  • Place seed potato pieces with the eyes facing upward.
  • Cover lightly with soil.

Spacing

  • Space potatoes 10–12 inches apart within rows.
  • Leave 24–30 inches between rows.

Hilling

  • As plants grow, mound soil around the base of the stems to cover developing tubers and improve yield.

Watering

Keep soil evenly moist throughout the growing season, especially during tuber development.

Fertilizing

Apply compost or a balanced fertilizer at planting to support healthy growth.

Harvesting

  • New potatoes can be harvested about 70 days after planting.
  • For mature potatoes, harvest when the plant foliage dies back.

With proper care, Sangre Red Seed Potatoes will produce a generous harvest of smooth, flavorful red potatoes that are perfect for a wide variety of kitchen uses.
