Growing Instructions for Zone 3b

Potatoes grow very well in colder climates and are a dependable crop for Zone 3b gardens.

Planting Time
Plant seed potatoes in spring once the soil temperature reaches about 45°F (7°C) and the soil can be worked.

Preparing Seed Potatoes

  • Larger potatoes can be cut into pieces, ensuring each piece has at least 1–2 eyes.
  • Allow cut pieces to dry for 24 hours before planting to reduce the chance of rot.

Location
Choose a location with full sun (6–8 hours daily) and loose, well-drained soil rich in organic matter.

Planting Depth

  • Dig trenches about 4 inches deep.
  • Place seed potato pieces with the eyes facing upward.
  • Cover lightly with soil.

Spacing

  • Space potatoes 10–12 inches apart within rows.
  • Leave 24–30 inches between rows.

Hilling

  • As plants grow, mound soil around the base of the plants to cover developing tubers and prevent greening.

Watering

Keep soil evenly moist throughout the growing season, especially during tuber formation.

Fertilizing

Apply compost or a balanced fertilizer at planting to support healthy plant growth.

Harvesting

  • New potatoes can be harvested about 80 days after planting.
  • For mature potatoes, harvest when the foliage dies back and skins have hardened.

With proper care, Russet Burbank Seed Potatoes will produce a generous harvest of classic baking potatoes with excellent flavor and storage quality.
