Seed Potato – Sieglinde (500g)

Sieglinde is a classic European gourmet potato variety prized for its smooth golden skin, firm yellow flesh, and excellent flavor. This early-season potato produces long, oval tubers with a buttery, slightly nutty taste that makes it a favorite for fresh cooking. Its firm texture holds together well, making it ideal for boiling, steaming, roasting, and especially potato salads.

This variety is known for its reliable yields and attractive, uniform potatoes. Sieglinde is considered a premium “waxy” potato, meaning it keeps its shape during cooking rather than breaking down. Gardeners appreciate its early harvest potential and high-quality culinary results, making it an excellent addition to any home garden.

Sieglinde seed potatoes are grown specifically for planting and will produce vigorous plants that deliver a dependable harvest throughout the growing season.

Growing Instructions (Zone 3b)

Potatoes thrive in cooler climates and perform very well in Zone 3b gardens.

  • Planting Time: Plant seed potatoes in late spring once soil temperatures reach about 7–10°C (45–50°F). In Zone 3b this is typically mid-May to early June.
  • Sun: Full sun is required for strong growth and good tuber production.
  • Soil: Loose, fertile, well-drained soil rich in organic matter with a pH between 5.0–6.5.
  • Preparation: If potatoes are large, cut into pieces ensuring each piece has at least 1–2 eyes. Allow cut pieces to dry for 1–2 days before planting to prevent rot.
  • Planting Depth: Plant pieces about 3–4 inches deep.
  • Spacing: Space plants 12 inches apart in rows 24–30 inches apart.
  • Hilling: When plants reach about 6–8 inches tall, mound soil around the base of the plants. Continue hilling as plants grow to encourage additional tuber development and prevent greening.
  • Watering: Maintain evenly moist soil, especially during flowering when tubers are forming.
  • Harvest: Harvest early “new potatoes” in about 65–75 days, or allow 85–100 days for full maturity.
  • Storage: Cure harvested potatoes in a dark, well-ventilated space for 1–2 weeks before storing in a cool, dark location.

Sieglinde is an excellent choice for gardeners looking for an early, high-quality potato with outstanding flavor and dependable yields.
